Worms in Safflower Seeds
Hi, I have a green cheek conure. Recently, I noticed that there were worms (and a moth) in his safflower seeds, which was stored away, for about two weeks. The thing is, I just bought the safflower seeds and have no idea why there are white catepillar like worms and a moth even flew out of it. Now, some of the safflower seeds are stuck together in clumps. I'm going to be throwing the whole tub of seeds away and was wondering, if giving my parrot those seeds would have been safe. Don't birds eat worms in the wild anyway? Additionally, are safflower seeds good for my parrot?Lafeber Reply

Hi Brent,
It sounds like seed moths & their larvae. Seed moth eggs are very common in all grain products - even in human foods. If stored in a warm room, the eggs will hatch out. When you buy seed, freeze it for a few days & this usually kills the eggs. The moths & larvae are actually good for your birds, but of course you don't want them in the house.
Fresh safflower seeds offer some nutrients, but since it can be hard to know how old seed is when you buy it, it is best to consider them a treat food.
Thank you for asking Lafeber,
Brenda
