Amazon picking at legs

I have a Double Yellowhead amazon about 11 months old.She just started picking at her legs.What causes this and what can I do to stop it?

Hi Wanda,

She is very young to start plucking like that. I would suspect an internal problem. It would be best to start by taking her to an avian vet for a complete check up.

It is important that she is on a balanced diet - a formulated diet like pellets, or our Avi-Cakes & Nutri-Berries. She also needs fresh fruits & veggies, dark leafy greens & healthy table foods. Make sure she has plenty of toys, a large cage & plenty of attention each day.

Plucking often starts as a medical problem & then turns into a habit, so it is important to have her checked out before the plucking becomes too severe.
