eggs

My female macaw is the only bird I have. She recently laid an egg and is sitting on it and pulling feathers. Should I take the egg from her? What do I do? It is not fertile......Thanks

Dear Donna

That is unusual for a single female Macaw to lay like that, but it does happen.. and sorry about the feather pulling as that is the Nesting behavior by most birds.

I suggest you let her sit on the egg for a few weeks.. or until she tires of it and leaves it be. Then you can discard it. Be sure to not give her any breeding soft foods for a while as that sometimes initiates nesting.

Her sitting on the egg will not harm her or her health, just be sure she is eating and drinking water.

Thank you
