We love to send out baskets of bird food!
When we draw the winner of our free bird food basket every month it gives us small glimpse of the bird households that will enjoy all the goodies.
Our latest winner is Janis and her birds, Maya and Poco, from South Carolina.
The insight Janis gives us of her flock is charming and made us all smile:

“Maya is my African Grey Timnah. She is 18 year old and calls my name constantly – in my husband’s voice. Poco is my female Orange Wing Amazon. She is 15 and is very loud but whistles the Andy Griffith’s Mayberry tune perfectly. They are wonderful pets that entertain us and friends, show affection and always make us laugh. They LOVE your Nutri-Berries for Parrots – especially the El Paso flavor. Maya will always give me a kiss for a Nutri-Berrie that she calls ‘cracker’.’

Bird Food Haven would be winning a free basket of bird food in our monthly drawing!
Dot and her bird, Raven, live in Georgia and have had their free basket delivered to them.
We asked Dot how she would describe Raven. Here is her reply…….
“I have a Nanday Conure, his name is Raven. He is quite colorful and he is 9 years old. He cannot talk clearly but he tries very hard. He can say “Hello” and mumbles things. I also have 2 dogs and Raven who get along great. I love birds. He is a real sweetheart. He loves Lafeber treats. He is very spoiled and loves to go outside with me in the summer. Raven and I thank you all very much!”
We think Raven is a lucky bird – not only because he got a bunch of Lafeber food but because he has Dot doting over him!

Dr. Lafeber Sr 1925-2001
The heart of Lafeber Company really is a true love for birds and is still inspired today by the special passion deep in the soft heart of our founder – Dr Lafeber Sr.
Dr Lafeber Sr was the grandfather of avian medicine. He pioneered life-saving techniques in the avian field throughout his career and he became known as one of the world’s foremost authorities of pet bird care. Compassion for the malnutrition of the birds in his veterinary practice pushed him to develop and produce the very first pelleted diet for companion birds and eventually led him to start Lafeber Company.
Dr Lafeber’s innovative work was rewarded with numerous awards including the Association of Avian Veterinarians Lifetime Achievement Award.
Dr Lafeber spent most of his life encouraging bird lovers everywhere and is best remembered for his inspirational bird lectures that enriched the lives of so many birds, bird owners and veterinarians.
After all is said and done – it still comes down to a matter of the heart – a pure and simple love for birds!

One of the best parts of Lafeber’s Free Bird Food Contest – besides the free bird food – is that we get a chance to interact with the winners! We always love the opportunity to know the stories behind their beloved feathered friends and we are moved by the passion and love that is so easily expressed between the lines.
Amy from the state of Washington won a basket of Lafeber favorites for her 3 birds. She gave us this beautiful introduction of her flock and we are sharing her words with you today:
Simba
Simba, our Timneh African Grey, joined our family about 18 years ago. He was one of many baby birds I hand raised for a bird store I worked at. There was just something about that little guy and we became very attached to each other. When it came time to put him up for sale I couldn’t imagine him going home with someone else…He never made it to the sales floor.
Cassie
Cassie, our sweet little Meyers Parrot, was adopted from a parrot rescue about 5 years ago after spending several years in a home with a larger parrot that repeatedly tangled with her. Cassie sustained quite a few injuries including the loss of half of her lower mandible and several toes, but she is still as sweet as pie.
Kanoa
Kanoa, our Eclectus, was adopted from a rescue group 3 years ago. Sadly he spent many years living in a situation where he suffered from neglect and poor nutrition. We hoped that love and improved diet would allow Kanoa to regrow his plucked feathers. Unfortunately most of his follicles are damaged beyond healing so he hasn’t had much feather regrowth. Feathers or not we love him and still think he’s a pretty handsome boy!

Home for the Holidays ~ As family and friends gather in your home for holiday celebrations, the extra commotion can be exciting yet overwhelming for your bird. It might be a great idea to cover half of the cage so your bird can enjoy the festivities and feel protected at the same time. You also may want to consider moving your bird to another room away from high traffic areas.
Deck the Halls ~ but not your bird’s cage! Be careful of ribbons and bows that can be shredded by your feathered friend. The threads can entangle a bird and cause injury.
Holly Jolly Christmas ~ Remember that beautiful traditional favorites like holly, poinsettia and mistletoe are poisonous to your bird.
O Christmas Tree ~ It’s natural to assume that your bird would enjoy a tree in your home. Please keep in mind, though, that white flocking on a Christmas tree is toxic to your bird. Tinsel can be dangerous if swallowed and an encounter with twinkling lights could turn out to be a shocking experience!
Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire ~ Scented candles can add a nice fragrance to your holiday atmosphere but should not be used when your bird is in the room. Also, please use caution as you do your holiday baking because fumes from burnt non-stick cookware can pose a serious hazard to your bird.
Jingle Bells ~ Jingle all the way home this Christmas with a new toy for your bird. Be sure the bells on any toy are the open-ended type since beaks and toes can get caught in the round jingle bells.

Oliver likes corn!
At Lafeber Company, we love to hear from happy customers! Among our happiest customers are the winners of our Free Bird Food Basket. We draw a name every month and send a basket of Lafeber favorites with a retail value of $50!
We were thrilled to hear from Marla – our winner drawn in September. She has 3 birds that will share her prize – an African Grey named Oliver, a cockatiel named Lucky and a parakeet named Georgie Girl.
Marla sent us pictures and shared a tidbit about each of her “kids” and we will in turn share with you ~
Oliver waits for his Nutri-Berries every morning – if he doesn’t get them his bell rings in anger! Marla adopted him 4 years ago.
Lucky is 15 years old and Marla has had her for her entire life. She loves Nutri-Berries and treats.

Georgie Girl found Marla at Yankee Stadium in 2005! She is named for Jorge Posada who was the hero of the game that night.
