One of our summer winners is Mary from Ohio and she is ecstatic about her free gift! Mary will be splitting her bird food basket between her 3 feathered friends – Skittles, Bucky and Kia. We asked Mary to tell us about her birds and she did! It is not hard to see that these 3 have a very special home ~
In Mary’s words – meet her feathered family:
Skittles: Indian Ring Neck We adopted her when she was 6 weeks old, and she is 3 now. She is my baby! As you can see, she kind of looks like the color
of a sour skittle…thus, her name. Skittles is an escape artist, and we have to double lock her cage to keep her in. She loves hanging out with her mommy (me) and she tries to help me teach when I am giving lesson or working with a student through my online classroom. Although Skittles is not really a talker, she can mimic nearly any sound she hears…she loves whistles and squeaky type noises. In fact, she has a race with the bedroom door…she tries to make the squeaky noise before it does! (I won’t let Daddy fix the door for this very reason!)
Bucky: Quaker Parrot We just adopted him about a month ago from some people who could not care for him or his friend anymore. He is 22 years old.
He loves to cuddle on anyone’s shoulder and if someone walks past his cage, he hollers “Let me out!” He has had a very rough life, full of bad eating habits, abuse, and too much exposure to cigarette smoke. So we are hoping to help him finish out his life in love and health. My daughter refers to Bucky as an old man…he is always muttering to himself and doesn’t have the best balance. (Bucky has something wrong with one of his legs, but the vet cannot find the problem) Although he is not sure about pellets, he is mostly loving his new diet of fresh fruits, veggies, seed, and lots of goodies.
(Bucky and Kia both came to us eating sunflower seeds, cheerios, cheezit’s, and chicken nuggets)
Kia: Military Macaw She is Bucky’s friend and is 11 years old. We adopted her at the same time as Bucky. She also has lived a rough life, not being
allowed out of her cage or handled for many years. She is very afraid of men, and even though she has been with us nearly a month, she still will not allow us to pet her. She will come out of her cage now and is started to talk more! We tell her bye bye every time we leave the house…one day when we left, we didn’t say it, so she said it to us! I do worry she will end up with a complex or two as she is learning to meow and say bad kitty. Kia loves to dance so music is a must and when a song goes off, she will demand more by shouting “Dance!” Kia also loves to eat our cooking…we all know when someone is in the kitchen, no matter where we are in the house. Kia screams until she gets some! I know, I know, a really bad habit to start, but when a Military Macaw screams, it is really hard to ignore!
Again, thank you for the wonderful prize!!
